PLAYER RATINGS: LIVERPOOL 3-1 WOLVES

PLAYER RATINGS: LIVERPOOL 3-1 WOLVES

Liverpool came from behind to beat Wolves 3-1 in the final game of the Premier League season. It wasn’t enough in the end as Manchester City completed a comeback of their own to clinch the title by a single point. Here are player ratings from the match.

Alisson – 9

Made some huge saves to keep his side level when Wolves broke on the counter. One from Hwang in a one on one was particularly impressive. He finishes level with Ederson in the race for the Golden Glove. Wonderful season he’s had. He can be proud.

Alexander-Arnold – 8

Played well, was one of a few who were trying to force an opening first half. Constantly popped up in midfield and tried to open Wolves up. Gave his all, as always. Some good set piece deliveries today, one led to the Salah goal.

Matip – 7

The offside trap was not at it’s efficient best today as Jimenez constantly springed in behind. Took a yellow after being too easily beaten by Hwang at the start of the second half. Forced the second goal when his initial header was cleared off the line and he headed the rebound into Salah’s path for the assist.

Konaté – 5.5

All over the place today as Jimenez ran him ragged. At fault for their goal after misjudging a simple long ball by Jose Sa. Caught napping on a few of their counters. Couldn’t live with the Mexican at all.

Robertson – 6

Poor for the first hour as his touch, passing and delivery left a lot to be desired. Improved late on and combined well with Firmino to net the third goal. Should have done much better with a shot at the backpost first half.

Henderson – 6.5

One cross to the backpost for Robbo was great but it was sideways and backwards most of the time when urgency was needed. Covered lots of space in the middle of the pitch as he was left all on his own on occasion.

Keita – 5

Not at the races today. Left for dead by Ait-Nouri time and time again. Didn’t add much going forward either and was taken off second half.

Thiago – 8.5

He was running the show till his unfortunate injury on the stroke of halftime. Nonchalant backheel flick put Mané through for the all important equaliser. Was the one player who looked like unlocking the Wolves defence. Was winning the ball back constantly as well. Hopefully he’s fit for the Champions League final.

Jota – 5

His form is very concerning. His touch was woeful today and he kept running into cul-de-sacs. Too easily beaten when their defenders carried the ball out of defence. Shocking today.

Mané – 9

Took the game by the scruff of the neck first half. Was on a one man mission to drag the team over the line at times. Took his goal clinically after being released by Thiago. Scored a classy chip but he was just offside. His close control in tight spaces caught the eye today, as did his workrate and attitude.

Diaz – 7

Put clean through on goal with Sa backtracking and a poor first touch allowed the keeper to get a block in. Has a tendency to go the long way round and then smack his shot into bodies. Needs to be way more ruthless than he is because he’s got the approach play to get into great positions.

Substitutes

Milner – 6

On for Thiago at the break and was alright.

Salah – 7

Scored the second goal and thought he had just won the league. Unfortunately the result at the Etihad had been overturned. Had a few more chances that he could have done better with but his outright refusal to use his right foot saw a few go to waste. Shares the Golden Boot with Son and wins the Playmaker award. Not a bad season is it?

Firmino – 6

He was underwhelming when he came on as he gave the ball away with almost every touch. Sharpened up late on and set up Robbo with a precise cutback.

Jürgen Klopp

The gaffer made seven changes to the side that beat Southampton on Tuesday night. Trent and Robbo returned to the backline, Henderson, Keita and Thiago started in midfield, whilst Mané and Diaz joined Jota in the front three. Gomez (who is nursing an ankle injury), Tsimikas, Milner, Elliott, Jones, Minamino and Firmino dropped out.

Salah and Van Dijk were named amongst the substitutes whilst Origi missed out with a muscle injury. Klopp’s men endured a slow start which saw Wolves go ahead. They got back into the game through Mané before Thiago went off injured. Milner came on at the break with Salah coming on early in the second half for Jota.

Firmino came on for Keita to prompt a change of shape. That worked as the Reds got the goals needed to win the game. Another title lost by the narrowest of margins though. Last time that happened we consoled ourselves by going out to win the Champions League. A similar reaction required this time.
