PLAYER RATINGS: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1-2 LIVERPOOL
Liverpool earned their first away win of the season with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Spurs. A Salah double had the Reds cruising before Kane pulled one back second half. The Reds saw it out though. Here are player ratings from the encounter.
Alisson – 7
Deflected a cross onto his post early on before fumbling Hojbjerg’s shot. Showed better handling after that and held firm to a Lenglet header from a corner. His long ball led to the second goal. Almost played a pass straight to Kane first half before seeing his clearance charged down by the England skipper after he dallied. Did well to push Dier’s overhit cross over late on.
Alexander-Arnold – 6
Played a ridiculous pass to play Darwin in early on. A trademark filthy pass. Played a couple of those throughout the game. Given a torrid time by Sessegnon defensively. Gave the ball away and shoved the Englishman down in the box early on and was lucky to get away with it. Gomez and Henderson had to be sent on to shore up that side because Spurs were targeting him.
Konaté – 8.5
Outstanding again. A rock at the back. Brought calm to the side with the way he took charge of situations and dealt with it without fuss. Crucially got a foot in to halt Sessegnon’s run after Trent had been left for dead first half. Unlucky for Kane’s goal.
Van Dijk – 7
Didn’t show the composure we’ve come to expect of him when Spurs began to pile on the pressure second half. Did well enough in the end. A huge header in stoppage time was particularly helpful.
Robertson – 7
Played a number of excellent balls down the left flank for Darwin early on. Was quiet after that. Woke up late on to go on a run past two Spurs players before his cross was deflected behind. Was slow to push out and block crosses into the box. Given a rollicking by Alisson as a result. Lost the ball in a dangerous area late on.
Fabinho – 8
Much improved today. Crucially got a foot in when needed and wasn’t easily bypassed tonight. His passing was assured as well. A welcome return to form.
Thiago – 6.5
First half he cruised through the game and played it at his pace. Second half he tired and gave it away a few times. Caught wrong side of Kulusevski for their goal. Played an exquisite ball through for Darwin but the Uruguayan was just offside. Could have given away a penalty late on when he caught Moura with a high boot.
Elliott – 8
Thought he was fantastic. A tactically disciplined performance on the right of a midfield three. Was fouled a number of times as Spurs just couldn’t get close to him. His close control was really good tonight. Never lost the ball. Tired as it wore on and was subbed.
Firmino – 5.5
Gave the ball away so many times tonight. His touch was off. Grafted though, and was part of a three pronged attack that caused Spurs all sorts of problems first half especially. He’s been overused in the past few months.
Salah – 9.5
Clinical showing. Took his first goal with aplomb, setting himself up with a touch before swivelling and hitting it home in the same motion. Lloris didn’t even move. Second one was a gift and he took full advantage, chipping Lloris for what turned out to be the winner. Job done. Match winner yet again.
Darwin – 8.5
Was our best player early on. Brought out a wonderful save from Lloris with a rasping drive from Robbo’s long ball. Went close again when he curled just wide. Found Salah for the opening goal. Second half he stuck to his defensive task and dropped back to help out.
He still carried a threat going forward and went close again when his right footed effort almost wrongfooted Lloris. He then hit the woodwork with a fierce left footed effort after Thiago’s pass. It wouldn’t have counted though as he wa An all round display tonight.
Henderson – 5
Lost the ball twice in bad areas. Not the impact the manager was looking for.
Jones – 6
Played on the left wing but had a lot of defending to do. Got a crucial touch on a loose ball on the edge of the box, with a Spurs player shaping to shoot.
Gomez – N/A
On to help defend the lead.
Oxlade-Chamberlain – N/A
Won a free kick on the right wing to ease the pressure in stoppage time.
Made three changes to the side that beat Napoli; with Robertson, Elliott and Darwin Nunez coming in for Tsimikas, Milner and Curtis Jones respectively. His side enjoyed a fast start, taking an early lead for a change.
Second half, Spurs grew into it and I felt the manager could have been quicker with his subs. The hosts pulled one back after making positive subs of their own. He reacted after 70 minutes, sending on the skipper and Jones. Sacrificed Darwin and Salah late on as well for extra security. Big win this.
